This statue of Smokey Bear, a mascot for the U.S. Forest Service Wildfire Prevention Campaign, is in front of the Mt. Pinos Ranger District Office in Los Padres National Forest, California. Smokey’s official birthday is August 9, 1944, when he was first debuted. In the spring of 1950, a living symbol of Smokey Bear was found in a three month old black bear cub who was badly burned in a fire in New Mexico - he passed away in 1976 and is buried at Smokey Bear Historical Park, where you can still visit his grave. Smokey is still going strong as a symbol of wildfire prevention, an increasingly important topic in our warming world. Especially here in arid California. You can read more about his mission at the official Smokey Bear website: https://smokeybear.com/en This particular statue was carved by artist Stan McCuen and dedciated by District Ranger Tony Martinez in 2019. It is carved out of the stump of an old pine tree. The model was processed in Agisoft Metashape from 184 photos taken with an iPhone SE
