Model's Description: Pollacha Bay trees a wider view 3d model contains 107,662 polygons and 54,347 vertices. Another exposure of intertidal peat on Uist’s west coast has substantial tree remains embedded within (and eroding out). Other similar woodland beach exposures have reported C14 dates to late Neolithic/early Bronze Age. From the reddish colour when cutting samples of the exposed wood, it is likely to be willow (Salix) but will need mcroscopic examination to confirm. The trees were likely to have been growing on the wetland edge of a freshwater loch, as peat cannot form in salt water. At this stage, Uist would have been several metres above the prevailing sea level of the time and would have exteded more to the West - by perhaps as much as 10-14 kilometres. The one metre range pole (top left) is aligned N-S, red to North - Pollacha Bay trees a wider view - 3D model by Smilemaker (@Smilemaker) [115e6d9] |
