The parish church of Weißenkirchen in der Wachau is surrounded by a fortification with three corner towers. It is dedicated to the Feast of the Assumption. A chapel was already mentioned on this site after the year 1000. In the second half of the 13th century, a church was built in the area of today’s southern aisle. In the first half of the 14th century, the church was extended to the north in the area of today’s central nave. A north aisle was added in 1439 and a north chapel in 1455. The massive north-west tower was erected in 1502. The late Gothic choir was built between 1519 and 1529. The fortifications were extended in the first third of the 16th century. The nave was baroqueized in 1736/1738. Austria’s oldest elementary school, which is still in use, is attached to the north side |
