Moroccans, Algerians and Tunisians fought in the ranks of the French Expeditionary Force under the command of General Alfonse Juin. The word goum meant a company of 200 soldiers. Goumiers were famous for their bravery and mobility in mountainous terrain (transport of equipment on mules). They were tough, used to bad weather and frost. They were often used for night raids behind enemy lines. Their reputation was tarnished in the Italian Campaign when they committed rapes and murder on some 2,000 Italian women |
