The drawings on the figure depict the habitat of the animal, blooming lotus flowers and lotus buds, a flying bird with wings outstretched, placing the hippopotamus in the middle of a marshy papyrus thicket. Nilpferdfiguren dienten im Mittleren Reich als Grabbeigabe, da das Nilpferd als Symbol für die Regeneration im Jenseits galt.
