The approximately 80 species of banana plant originate - except for one species in Tanzania - all from tropical to subtropical Asia and western Pacific. There are over 1000 crosses of the cultivated banana. Compared with other fruit varieties, the conventional cultivated bananas contain a lot of fructose, i.e. a lot of carbohydrates and therefore a lot of food energy. The dessert banana (Musa × paradisiaca) is one of the most consumed fruits in the world average.
