Scan of aurochs (Bos primigenius) skeleton from the Biological Museum at Lund University, Sweden. Catalog number Lzzz/3295 The aurochs is an extinct cattle species and was one of the largest herbivores in the Holocene. In southern Sweden, the aurochs was present during the Holocene climatic optimum until at least 7,800 years BP. The gradual extinction of the aurochs in Central Europe was concurrent with the clearcutting of large forest tracts between the 9th and 12th centuries. The last known aurochs herd lived in a marshy woodland in Poland’s Jaktorów Forest. The last aurochs cow died in 1627 from natural causes. Source Wikipedia Scanned with Artec Leo.
