Anna Leska, born on November 14, 1910 and passed away on January 21, 1998, was a Polish pilot and the first woman, as well as one of only three Polish women, in the British Air Transport Auxiliary, a wartime organization responsible for ferrying aircraft. In September 1939, she was called up for auxiliary military service, appointed as a lieutenant for the duration of the war, and assigned to the Staff Squadron of the Aviation Command. On September 22, Leska successfully escaped in an RWD-13 aircraft from a Polish airfield that had been overrun by German forces. Via Romania and France, she reached Great Britain, where she began efforts to join the British Air Transport Auxiliary, a wartime auxiliary air transport service. On January 1, 1941, after completing her training and passing the examinations, she became a member of the Air Transport Auxiliary, being the 28th woman to join the ATA |
